                 Divided We Fall

When Detective George Renda retired from the New York City Police Department and moved to Sedona, his life changed dramatically. Instead of working long, stressful days on the job, George could now spend most mornings enjoying a leisurely breakfast on his poolside lanai. Afterward, George would either play golf, take his fishing boat out on the lake or ride his horse along the winding trails in the scenic foothills. And, when the beautiful sunsets brought these activities to an end, George returned to his ranch house to spend the evenings with Lena Morgan. From the moment he met Lena, George was captivated. And, before long, the affable city boy and the spirited country girl fell effortlessly into a romantic relationship.

They made an impulsive decision to live together, and the arrangement was working exceptionally well. In fact, George was so content, he easily overlooked Lena's occasional criticism. Besides, her complaint about his tendency to neglect his share of the chores wasn't completely inaccurate. Even though George loved his carefree lifestyle, he did not hesitate to interrupt it when he learned that the New York police were unable to find out who killed his close friend's son. Determined to help his bereaved friend, George ignores Lena's misgivings and returns to Brooklyn. After he personally investigates the murder, George reunites with his former partner, Sergeant Cynthia Tracano, recruits a street hustler he nicknames Willy and uses unorthodox methods to catch the killer. Once he thoroughly persuades the killer that it would be in his best interest to cooperate, George hands him over to the police. But unfortunately, solving the crime does not produce the usual happy ending. When interrogated, the killer confesses to being a professional hit man working for a nationwide murder for hire organization that is managed by people who conceal their identities from their employees and clients. Believing that his inadvertent interference with the operation of Association's business has  provoked it's leaders to retaliate, George desperately tries to find some way to protect the friends who helped him. Further complicating matters, Lena suddenly appears in the city. She is furious with George for getting himself into a such a horrendous situation. But nevertheless, ready willing and able to help him destroy the stealth enemy.
